[ History ] :
Tada

[ Personality ] :

Wilfully stupid, fearlessly valiant, endlessly confident, the Gurren Brigade's demon ace -- the truth is Kamina is none of these things.

When first introduced, Kamina comes across as a brash, loud punk, with more brawn than brains, a giant ego, confidence in spades and not even a vague understanding of such silly concepts like 'fear' or 'laws of physics'. He's the first one to rush into any situation, no matter the size of the opponents standing in his way and he will always be the last one to give up. He's a stubborn never say die, never surrender, never bend kind of man. His first act in the show is to try and burst through the ceiling through a plan involving a lot of pig-moles and a tiny little drill. And then when a giant ganmen crashes through the ceiling and lands in their village, Kamina is all too ready to face off against the giant monster with only a nodachi that he stole from his village chief not even five minutes beforehand. It really is not hard to see why Yoko refers to Kamina as 'a man of endless stupidity'.

As the show continues on Kamina remains that way; from start to finish, Kamina is the kinda guy who is 100% on 120% of the time. He's loud, prone to shouting, and his personality can be incredibly over-powering to many. He picks fights easily, argues about little things cause he is too hot-headed to listen to reasoning, but he forgives just as easily if whoever it was shows some real remorse. Kamina is very much a man ruled by his emotions, often telling others to kick reason to the curb to do the impossible. He's got a simple set of rules he believes in --don't pick on someone weaker than you, protect those you care about, live for what you believe-- but rules that go beyond that bug him. He's not a man for social niceties or rules for rules' sake. He's unrealistic to a fault --he wasn't even on the surface for a few weeks before he was already talking about claiming the moon--, or at leas that is how he comes across to others. But Kamina is not the kinda guy who would let himself be stopped simply by the fact that it is impossible or that it has never been done before. After all, they never had the great Kamina-sama trying it before.

But the truth is, that is not all there is to Kamina.

In reality, Kamina is an idealist, a dreamer whose big dreams only get replaced by bigger dreams. Ever since his father showed him a glimpse of the surface and then left Kamina behind when the latter was not courageous enough to follow, Kamina has been dreaming of going to the surface one day, of meeting his father there, and as the years progressed his desire grew and grew until the little underground Jiiha village could not contain him any longer.

But even with that strong desire, Kamina didn't know how to achieve it. He was impatient, lacking in direction and confidence. He constantly questioned and doubted himself, wondering why he had not been able to follow in his father's foot steps. In the end, it took getting trapped underground with Simon for him to understand his true path. Trapped in that hole, Kamina was unable to do anything, but Simon endlessly kept digging. And it was there that Kamina found his strength in the form of Simon as well as his purpose: whenever Simon would falter and let his fear grow too big, Kamina would beat it down with an overconfident show of courage, endlessly encouraging Simon to keep digging.

Simon would in fact remain one of the most important people in his life right up to his death. Kamina has often said that Simon is his steadying influence. Simon calms him down and keeps him from going too wild. And in return, Kamina steadies Simon's confidence, giving him a broad back to chase after until the day Simon can walk beside him, and then walk in front of him, surpassing him like Kamina knows he surely will some day. Simon and kids like him are Kamina's reason for fighting, desiring above all to create a world in which they can live without fear with only the blue skies above them.

And the attitude that started with Simon, soon extends to the rest of the Gurren Brigade. Kamina becomes their leader, their general in battle, and their rallying point. It is hearing the stories of Kamina's battles as well as hearing his speeches that inspires others to capture ganmen of their own and join in him in his war against the beastmen. Kamina convinces them to throw down the shackles of their fear and finally start their counter attack. Kamina's trust in his men is never-ending and unwavering. Though there is not one he trusts as strongly as Simon. Kamina knows his little bro is always going to pull through for him, no matter how bleak the odds seem, and that trust has been the crux of many of his plans. Even when questioned on it by others, even when hearing strong arguments against using Simon, Kamina will not stray from his brother's side, admitting that he doesn't really have a reason for it except following his heart. They are partners, after all.

Another important person to him is Yoko. They met when she crashed into their village, hunting the ganmen that had fallen through their ceiling moments before. Kamina immediately hits on her, though he withdraws in disgust when he finds out she is an undergrounder much like himself. They become fast friends though, and the belligerent sexual tension never quite goes away. They often snipe at each other, both having very strong dominant personalities, but the affection between them is genuine and their trust in each other strong. Yoko becomes the person who sees the less confident sides of Kamina, perhaps because Kamina understands that she does not depend on his confidence as Simon and the rest of the brigade do. In her, he confides his fears and insecurities. Right before the great battle, Yoko kissed Kamina, and Kamina returned said kiss with a promise to return everything to her tenfold. He dies however before they can take their relationship any further.

Kamina is a man who lives life to the fullest, always throwing 100% of himself into any situation. Even though he has insecurities and fears like any person, he has learned to set them aside, knowing he can trust and build on others to break through those fears. Kamina never does anything his heart isn't completely in, which makes him an amazing leader, and a terrible kid to try and lord over. Kamina can butt heads with the best of them, and is very much a Kamina's way or we ain't going no way kinda guy. And it is this attitude, this ability to put everything of himself into life and burn so brightly that makes Kamina able of dying happily with a smile on his face. After all, he knows he has accomplished everything he could, he has worked his hardest, and now he has a dependable little bro to carry on not in Kamina's spirit, but in his own.

[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] :

+ Kamina is actually one of the characters with the lowest level of spiral power in the show -- no doubt in part due to him dying in episode eight, whoops spoilers -- but what he lacks in power, he makes up liberally in trust, charisma and the ability to inspire. Kamina is the leader, but he is not the ace. His men are the aces, and he is the rallying point; he is the banner under which they unite; he's the general that takes away their fears by denying his own and appearing nothing but confident. Because who can doubt their inevitable win, when you have a devil leader like that leading them into battle.

+ While many of Kamina's plans come across as woefully stupid, they often possess an odd sort of cleverness that allows him to defeat even the strongest opponents. He has an unexpected ability to find common sense even in the heat of battle, pointing out that fleeing from Dai-Gunzan would leave them completely open to be attacked. In fact, from a strategic point of view, all the battles the Dai-gurren brigade engages in after his death implement far less complex plans than the ones he was able to come up with. Kamina is a good on his feet kind of thinker, that does not espouse any sort of tactics. He is fighting for a dream here, a few dirty moves here and there are nothing that important.

+ Kamina is a quick learned and a strong physical fighter. He quickly learned to master a gun despite not knowing what it was at all only an episode before -- he in fact used his gun as a hammer once and nearly shot himself in the family jewels-- and he went from unable to keep up with Viral unless combined with Simon, to being able to defeat him piloting only Gurren.

+ Rousing speeches. Do I even need to mention the rousing speeches.

- Kamina is an idealist who has a very strong opinion on what he considers wrong and right and he can be stubborn as all hell when facing viewpoints that oppose his. An example of this is when they first crashed into Rossiu's old village. As a village with very few resources, the high priest had instated a policy where the village could never have more than fifty inhabitants, using a lottery system --under his control, to make sure he was able to pick who was chosen-- to select people to be sent to the surface whenever the number exceeded fifty. While this policy makes sense from a logical point of view, Kamina could not bend to such injustice, challenging the high priest on his policies, not understanding how the people of the village could live in such a place.

- While Kamina is not as wholely stupid as he come across at first sight, he is still capable of pulling some truly bone-headed moves. He's the kinda guy that would rush in first and ask questions maybe later, which is exactly the kind of attitude that leads him to use a gun as a hammer. His attention can also easily be diverted by good food and beautiful women as shown in the bathhouse episode. He also doesn't seem to have the best memory for faces and names, asking both Kittan and Viral who they were again.

- He has really shitty naming sense.

[ Other Important Facts ] :

- Kamina can't read. Not one bit. He's probably going to yell at text posts until they stop being text and start being sensible things like sound.

- Kamina has a very limited set of experience seeing as he was raised in a literal hole in the ground. He didn't know what coffee was until he came to the surface, so there is gonna be a lot of normal, every day things that he is going to be utterly confused by.

[ Sample ] :

First a thread voice-testing him against David the Gnome right here.
And another one talking to chibiterasu here

And a general sample

[Kamina plants his foot on a rock, overlooking the ocean. Up on the surface, he thought, there were no walls, but apparently that wasn't quite correct; walls of water and invisible walls just beyond that. There was just no way a guy was gonna get that. But it didn't matter. Ceilings, water, invisible walls, he was going to crash through all of them. Because that was the way of the man with an unrivalled fighting spirit, the tenacious leader of the Dai-Gurren Brigade, the great Kamina-sama.

But before that there was one more obstacle. No, not an obstacle, a chance. A Chance!

Kamina grins rakishly as he plants his glasses on his face, the sun glinting off their orange surface.]

I've decided.

[Who is he even talking to? Doesn't matter. Burning words need to be spoken and real men face their battles head-on, letting their opponents know they are coming to get the most out of battle. His arm comes down in a wide arc, jabbing a finger at the moving speck in the distance: the mosasaurus, his opponent.]

I'm gonna ride that.

[ Questions? Comments? Concerns? ] :

Can I take over the Defence Force and rename it the Dai-Gurren Brigade? And make it really cool? And then maybe make some people make mechas for it. AND THEN WE CAN BURST THROUGH THE BUBBLE AND DEFEAT THE SCIENCE TERROR KEEPING US BOUND AND COMPLACENT. IF THERE ISN'T A PATH, WE WILL CREATE ONE WITH THE STRENGTH OF OUR COMBINED HEARTS AND THE POWER OF OUR FISTS. ALSO OUR TOTALLY AWESOME MECHA THAT I HAVE ALREADY STATED WILL BE CREATED UPON MAKING KAMINA YOUR RIGHTFUL LEADER AND BIG BRO.

I'm joking.

Probably.
